At night, when a woman walks down the street by herself, pay attention to the way she walks, the way she clutches her purse to her side, and the way her eyes dart back and forth, prepared to flee in case someone comes near. Compare that to the way a man confidently strides with a smirk plastered across his face, occasionally cat-calling a reluctant victim. In Jackson Katz’s book the Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help, the author argues that the violence and harassment made against women is indeed, a men’s issue. Within the first few chapters, Katz offers various scenarios, and a myriad of statistics. However, “in a 500 page book on gender violence, this author does not mention once that woman can and are abusive toward men” (Smith, Aaron).…
My AP Literature teacher, Mr. Mercer, once asked my class a serious question: why do women apologize so much? A thoughtful pause followed while the class, females especially, pondered the answer. My teacher elaborated with a short anecdote about a female student from a previous class: Mr. Mercer was standing in front of the doorway before class, speaking with another student. The female student approached the doorway so Mr. Mercer and the student courteously moved out of the way. The female student nodded and uttered a quick “sorry” as she hustled past them.…
One very contradictory issue that has emerged over the recent years within community policing is racial profiling. Racial profiling is defined as the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense. Profiling of this nature impacts communities, minority groups, and even policing agencies in a negative manner ultimately. Many argue that criminal profiling differs from racial profiling and is a vital part of the job therefore it must be done. Others argue that it is not as great of a problem as the media sometimes portrays it to be.…
Racial profiling is commonly known as a target. This target singles out people of color, such as blacks that seem to be suspicious based upon their race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. Racial profiling should be illegal because it creates hostile racial tensions, civil liberties destroyed, and equality is no longer in society. Hostile racial tension, is when once race dislikes another race. In this case African Americans are disliking Americans.…
All over the word hate crimes are a problem, people need to become more educated on how hate crimes negatively impact people's lives. If society becomes further educated on the negative emotional and criminal effects of hate crimes, then the overall percentage of hate crimes will decrease. A hate crime is defined as an offense motivated by hatred, bias, or prejudice, based on the race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation of another individual or a group of individuals (Schmalleger, 2015). Hate crimes have always been an issue in America; however, following the terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, hate crimes became more prevalent.…
Huey reflected upon the mis-treatment in his book To Die for the People; "The police were very brutal to us even at that age" (Newton 53). Police harassment and physical abuse of Black people became part of every day life for many Blacks across the country. Although the Civil Rights movement was mainly a Southern phenomenon, the non-violent ideology and integrationist focus of the movement became according to historians Floyd W. Hayes and Francis A. C. Kiene as "sources of increasing frustration and disillusionment for many Blacks in Northern and Western cities (Hayes and Kiene 159) . " As the Civil Rights Movement approached the end of the 1960's northern Blacks became angered by the television coverage of police beatings, incarcerations of Southern non-violent Blacks, employment discrimination along with the police brutalities in Northern Black neighborhoods (Brooks 136). Huey Newton recalls in his autobiography Revolutionary Suicide, "We had seen Martin Luther King come to Watts in an effort to calm the people and we have seen his philosophy of nonviolence rejected.…
Bullying has happened a lot, and sometimes it is taken past the, school level to the law enforcement level, because it has became a crime, most of the time, a hate crime. There are many types of bullying, teasing, name calling, inappropriate sexual comments, taunting, threatening to cause harm, social bullying, leaving someone out on purpose, physical, and so many more. After two high profile teens committed suicide in 2010, Tyler Clementi and Phoebe Prince, Criminal charges were brought against the students who had bullied them online and in person. Only 18 states include cyber-bullying in their anti-bullying legislation, while it makes up a small portion of overall bullying incidents. Online Bullying was reported less frequently than in-person…

Sexual Harassment Based on the criteria of pathos, ethos, and logos, the editorial column is better rhetorically than the editorial cartoon. The purpose of this paper is to compare an editorial column and an editorial cartoon. The two texts I am comparing is the editorial cartoon by Gustavo Rodriguez and the editorial column by Megan Humphries on sexual harassment. I am comparing them because sexual assault is a big issue in our world today.…
A hate crime is an offense, usually violent, motivated by the prejudice of one specific status a single individual holds, i.e., sexual orientation, religion, gender, ethnicity, ect. These crimes are driven simply because of the hatred one person feels towards another. An individual is targeted because of something about themselves a single person or group of people do not approve of. Hate crimes are the highest priority of the FBI’s Civil Rights program and each year an estimated 1,200 crimes are reported, however, the number is most likely higher due to underreported cases. In 2012, an astonishing 5,796 were committed.…
Sexual harassment has always been, and still is, an extremely controversial topic. Some people tend to think that sexual harassment cases are all stemmed from lies made up by victims to gain attention or sympathy. Others, however, see sexual harassment as a serious crime that has been locked away in a vault and ignored by society. Whichever side one takes, the fact that sexual harassment and sexual discrimination laws play an important part in many aspects of society still stands. From the beginning of time, humans have struggled in deciding what rights certain groups should or should not have, and, slowly, everyone started to be set upon the same plane.…
Through the reading of Galtung “Violence, Peace, and Peace Research” he explained the two concepts of structural and personal violence and how peace is considered to be absence of violence. Galtung explains the dimensions of the terms peace and violence and how they can affect the life of a person. Furthermore, he refuses the idea to view violence as the intentional harm done by an actor (object) to someone else (subject). However, he notes “violence is present when human beings are being influenced so that their actual somatic and mental realizations are below their potential realizations” (Galtung 1969, p. 168). Galtung defines structural violence as “social injustice” (Galtung 1969, p.171).…
It was in 2014 that songwriter and singer Sia Furler had been acclaimed for writing the song “Elastic Heart” for the blockbuster movie Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The music video features the young, talented Maddie Ziegler dancing with Shia LaBeouf in a beautiful performance that depicts the internal struggle of the free spirited child and the restrained adult. However, within moments the viewers and the audience began to lose sight of the artwork and began to exclaim in horror of the so called “suggestiveness” that the performance held between the 29 year old man and the 13 year old girl. So more often than not that this happens in the media; when innocent child 's play is suddenly seen as inappropriate, suggestive, and sexual. This presence…
It is rare to see a slim, hour glassed shaped, D-cup, and round butted woman walking along the streets of the city. Not all women act like helpless princesses, waiting for their prince charming to sweep them to safety. Also, it is illegal to sexually or violently harass anyone of any gender. However, in many games, the law, and logic does not apply to the virtual NPCs (non-playable character). Objectification and sexual abuse toward women existed for a long period of time, as it was used to attract male consumers.…
The relationship between the police and the people they protect has been a major topic of interest for as long as there has been a police presence in the United States (and around the world). In the United States officer involved shootings and uses of force have divided the public and police alike. On one side of the argument people complain about police having too much unchecked power. People argue that this power leads them to use excessive force in encounters with citizens (during or after someone is placed in custody). On the other side of the argument it is believed that police are doing a good job by meeting force with force when needed and that they are not overstepping any boundaries while using it.…
