Becoming An Ophthalmologist

Improved Essays
I remember the first time I stepped foot into an operating room. I was not set back by the sound of the machines or the site of blood, but instead I fell in love. I was fascinated by the way the physician’s hands delicately removed the cataract and how they intricately placed a new lens, giving their patient sight. This is why I dream of becoming an ophthalmologist. While I have begun taking the steps needed in order to grasp an understanding of my potential career through job shadowing at the Eye Care Center, Florida Eye Institute, and Tullahoma Surgery Center, I have also enrolled in multiple dual enrollment courses as a way to begin my degree in biomedical sciences. Attending college and graduating with this degree will allow me to connect …show more content…
This degree will also allow me to work in a lab so I can fund medical school and obtain experience in surgery when working with lasers, which is a common practice for ophthalmologists. Overall, I hope to be able to return as an alumnus to my chosen college and teach others the steps I took starting in high school to become who I am, and show them who they also can be. The majority of ophthalmologists are men, and with this being a growing field for women, I will have the opportunity to break gender norms in my future career. This is something I am proud to say I will have the potential to do provided the Sarah Rudolph Memorial Scholarship. Many applicants will take this time to list their impressive grades, accomplishments, and leadership activities that fueled their high school success. If you take one look at my resume, you will see all of that. What you will not see, however, is under the line mentioning that I am the HOSA International Champion in medical photography, the number of times I practiced that speech to myself as I drove back and forth to Huntsville Hospital after my mother had an emergency hip replacement this past November and I was left solely in …show more content…
As a self-sufficient student, the Sarah Rudolph Memorial Scholarship will allow me to become who I know I can be without the extra worry of how I will fund these dreams. I am a pristine candidate for this scholarship because my goal is to leave a legacy for the THS Yearbook Staff and my entire list of accomplishments thus far has only been achieved because I took the extra step and went the extra mile to obtain them. For my talent in Distinguished Young Women, I spoke on Ambition. I said in my speech, "Many girls are told to marry the doctor, but I will become one." With this scholarship, I will lay the groundwork to do just

On the first day of my 4th period Pre-AP Social Science class, my teacher announced that she would be nominating 2 students for a scholarship based on their academic performance and service to the community. For an 8th grader, this seemed to be the most exciting opportunity I had ever heard of. It would allow some separation from my ultracompetitive classmates at one of the top middle schools in California. Even though history was not my forte, I devised a regimen that I would follow. I studied everyday afterschool, spent hours upon hours on projects, and never turned in an assignment without checking it over 3 times.…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

Future Plans and Reasons for Applying for a Farm Bureau Scholarship Some kids play sports in high school. Others march in the band, star in school plays, or join the healthcare career training program. Me, I didn’t do any of those things, because, after middle school, I made the decision to devote my life and career to help better the industry of agriculture in the future. Thus, I didn’t spend my afternoons out on the field or on the stage in high school, I spent mine in barns, animal pens, and classrooms, as an avid member of both 4-H and FFA along with involvement in numerous other programs related to agriculture in the local community. Not trying to brag on myself, although scholarship applications like this are the place to do so, but the accomplishments I achieved in my youth career along with those I continue to achieve have led me to have one of the most decorated resumes…
