Becoming An Anesthesiologist: A Short Story

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Oyo State, Nigeria. I was home for the holidays from boarding school and enjoying an exuberant game of “tag.” Our game was made all the more exciting by its location near an abandoned well, which we were not allowed to be. Unfortunately, my excitement was short-lived as I slipped and fell into the well. There was pandemonium among my friends as I tumbled head-long into the dark waters. I was so terrified by the thought of what would happen to me once my parents found out that it overshadowed the pain from my injuries. Now fifteen years later, I do not remember the series of the events that culminated in my eventual rescue; but the memory that stood out in my mind was that of a middle-aged? man with a kind face who took me in …show more content…
It was much later that I discovered his name was Doctor Ade and that he was an anesthesiologist. Perhaps it was serendipitous that I fell into the well that day.
