Becoming an Adult That old saying “enjoy being a kid while you can” or when people told you that when you’re an adult that you will miss being a kid. Everything they told you as a kid was true. As a kid you have no responsibilities, no bills, and no worries. The moment you turn 18 you get slapped with adulthood, and it’s a rude awakening. This is a stage in life that I was not prepared for and wish it could have been avoided. Take me back to being 8 and my toys being the only things I have to worry about. As an adult I always wanted to be successful. Being successful to me has never been being rich and all of that, for me it’s more of not struggling, having family, and most of all being happy. It all starts when you turn 16 and you are able to get a job. As a kid I was always eager to be an adult, get a job, have my own car, etc. Oh boy do I regret all of that. Once you get that job and start making your own money, the responsibilities come in. Finding out that there is such a thing called car insurance was a terrible day for me. Growing up I was oblivious to all the things that come along with being an adult. I thought you were able do …show more content…
Once I turned 18 it’s time to live on my own. That is usually the cultural norm, time to really become an adult and have my own place. In my mind it’s all great and I felt grown up. I started having to pay rent, utilities, cable/internet and all my groceries. That means I have to work more with no time left in me. So now with college, a job, and having my own place, stress comes in big time. I am having to worry about the bills and my school work, there is no longer someone here to baby me. All my life I always said I would never struggle, that being said I am right in the middle of it. Coming home to no water was always an experience I will never forget. It’s not easy being an adult. Parents and people that have grown up and done this chapter in their life deserve the utmost

Like many people, I have a reason for almost all of my thoughts and actions, but at a major turning point in my life this changed as did many of my other unique qualities. Before this, I had always kept a positive and secure mind, but I had never thought of the repercussions of keeping my true emotions unexpressed. Feelings of anger and rage (like those of a coming-of-age story), were all that filled my mind at this time, and it was directed towards everyone, not just those who caused it. The worst part of having these feelings was the fact that I kept them locked inside giving no way to express them. I began arguing with my parents, friends, God, and even myself.…

When I was fourteen, a neatly demarcated threshold between childhood and adulthood manifested before me, identifying itself as “Coming of Age.” And to be fully honest, I wasn’t thrilled about it. To my limited knowledge, Coming of Age was just a program at my church where each week we would talk at length about, well… something. After that process had repeated itself enough, I would have to make a personal speech about the somethings I had learned. All that time for a vaguely defined speaking commitment hardly seemed worth the trouble.…

    3. Agency Agency, as a problematic, differs from the problematic of freedom. Whereas freedom is more concerned with lack of external constraints and freedom from oppressive laws or societal structures, agency relates to an individual’s ability to make decisions that are good for them and are likely to bring about positive results. Whether or not a person has agency changes the way we think about their freedom and about saving them. Humans can be denied agency from the outside, in that their ability to make their own decisions and have others respect them is not present, or actually lack agency from the inside, as in the case of young children who need guidance to understand how to act in their best self-interest.…

The spring of 2015 was a spring that I will never forget. My dad had been sick with what we thought was just an average cold that just would not go away. After several tests, the doctors knew something was very wrong with his blood. In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…

A Word on Introspection and Independence “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I am sure that the majority of us ran into this question dozens of times during our childhood. When I was younger the answer would come to me as easy as saying my name. A veterinarian or a ranch owner or a writer, I had many phases. Conversely, if you asked me that question now that I am seventeen years old, the only answer I’d give you would be a shrug of shoulders.…
