The following are three major points I took away from this week’s session. These points/factors are relevant when looking at the inequitable health status of our country between groups, specifically Hispanic/Latino.
First, I thought the video ‘Becoming America’ greatly emphasized the concept of the Latino/Hispanic paradox. This is when newly immigrated members from Hispanic countries experience great health at first. The video mentioned their health being even better than those with high SES. However, it was made clear, that over time (within a generation) these newly immigrated Hispanics/Latinos experience worse and worse health, as the video said “the good health comes with an expiration date”. I remember learning about this paradox and the misconceptions and issues with this populations health. Overall, it seems the negative aspects of America culture has a huge impact on these newly migrating families. …show more content…
The video made a point in articulating research that the younger a person is when they migrate to the U.S. the more at risk they are for developing physical and mental health problems and diseases. These younger children are more easily assimilated into American culture and sometimes reject their heritage culture or parent’s hopefulness, which puts them at risk for various stressors. Along with this, traditionally, these Hispanic/Latino members are very family oriented. After coming to America, parents must work long hours (typically stressful jobs with little control) so there is much less family time, overall having a negative effect. In turn, upholding strong family ties and support can help with struggles and vulnerabilities. Other community support such as, education, employment, housing, and community can greatly protect
