Becoming Adolescent Treatment Worker Job Analysis

Becoming an Adolescent Treatment Worker (ATW) was one of those experiences. As an ATW I have encounter a lot of children/youth from ages 12 to 18 years old. I was able to interact with youth that had several background histories that I can relate to you. Not only did I monitor them, pass medication, help with homework but I was able to be a role model, a mentor, and advocate for them. There were days that the youth would have challenging times and I would be there to help them make the right decisions, use their coping skills, and help them regroup from the situation. As I move forward with my education I want to be able to apply my knowledge from this position with serving our children/youth better in social welfare environments. With my personal

Reaching adolescence I experienced my first episode of mania at age 14 and was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 15. At age 21 I became involved with a severely psychological abusive partner for four years, which damaged my self-esteem, took away my voice, and sense of self. I then married an even more abusive man at age 25 and divorced at 26, which resulted in PTSD. I then entered an intensive outpatient DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) program which has helped extensively. I rediscovered who I was, what I wanted, my passions, developed coping strategies in emotional regulation, and discovered how to stand up for myself and that I wasn’t selfish for not conforming to what everyone else wanted me to.…

However, I realized the purpose of why we go to school and how it has taught me to learn from my mistakes. It has helped me to expand on the idea of how failure could open up many opportunities for my future and act as stepping stones that guide me to be a successful individual. This mindset has motivated me to stay positive and do the best I can as a learner and student. I learned how powerful and important it was to be an optimistic person, which helped me to expand my interest in further spreading positiveness to my community, like the color orange. Although I’m not an important figure that might assist the community, like the president or a teacher, I believe that my job is to be like the color orange and share the positivity and happiness to my surroundings, step by…

Short Term 12 was a very interesting movie. It had hints of being realistic, but with aspects where you knew it was a movie. It’s about a group of workers who work in a foster care residential facility setting. The main character, Grace, deals with her own personal struggles while she supervises the children at the facility. I have a short bit of experience at a facility like Short Term 12 in some aspects; I can see where parts of the movie are realistic and where are some are an exaggeration because it is a movie.…

What are key things to keep in mind when working with teens (attitudes, skills, values)? I think the one think that people who are looking to work with teens should keep in mine is to always to look to learn how things are different from back in the days. For example, people who were studying to work with teens in the 1900's had to learn how things worked when technology came in the 2000's. How it worked and how teens are using it in their daily lives. In 20 years thinks might be different…

For adolescents I would talk with them about how messages they receive from other people when they were younger influences their current action now and help them to recognize which of the five life scripts which is dictating their actions be perfect, be strong, try hard, please others, hurry up. The people I have supported up to this point have developed life scripts based on survival and self preservation. They now have come to realize they no longer need to be stuck in the life script and they are changing their lives for the better.
