There are different types of veterinarians who are responsible for certain things that they specialize in. There are veterinarians who take care of pet animals like dogs, cats, turtles. These veterinarians’ job is to diagnose diseases and treat them with vet medicines or surgeries based on medical and lab tests. Also, they prevent future diseases with vaccination. This is the type of veterinarians I had a chance to work with as a volunteer. Even though these veterinarians only have to deal with small animals and work in a small office or hospitals, their jobs are just as hard as other veterinarians. When I was following Dr. Alan Coffman at Allen Veterinary hospital, I noticed he had to work with insane schedule with morning shift starts from 7:30 am to 12pm and afternoon shift from 1:30 pm till 7 pm. From 2pm to 5pm are time for surgeries. Approximately, Dr. Coffman has to perform fourteen surgeries per day. There are minor surgeries such as scratches that need stiches, dental care, broken bones that would take 20 minutes to finish. But there are major surgeries such as Ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) which is basically knee dislocation or Cataracts Surgery that require up to hour and a half to perform (Coffman). Their work plays as an important role to animal and human health. Research shows that owning a dog or cat can bring lots of health benefits to the owners. It also shows that dog or cat owners are less likely suffer from depression. It can lower blood pressure, help heart attack patient survive much longer, and extend human life time. Owning a dog or cat can also help elderly to bring back joy to their life and connect with other people (HelpGuide). Without a doubt, pets have become a large part of family’s life. To secure the protection and health of our pets, it is vital to understand the importance of veterinarians. Veterinarians also play a big role in the medical field. Those who work in the laboratories are contributing their work to identify new diseases on animals and ultimately to find new vaccinations. Their jobs are also to discover a way to prevent contagious animal diseases from spreading to human. Another job they carry out is to test the side effects of new discovered medicines on animals that are physiologically and anatomically similar to human before put them to mass
