The fields of science, technology, engineering, and math are paramount in understanding the world around us. I am passionate about science because it involves the pursuit of discovery and pushing the boundaries of the unknown. Science is composed of tested hypotheses that explain how and why our environment works as it does. However, under the scientific method, it is not assumed that what was previously believed to be true cannot be proven otherwise with additional research. This provides an essential check and balance system and allows facts and research to support our hypotheses. The world is continually evolving, and as a result our understanding of it is continually changing. This is seen commonly in the field of medicine where people are treating a variety of ailments to improve quality of life.

In many ways medicine is a puzzle; using symptoms, physical exam, and test results to determine a diagnosis. There is an added challenge working with animals who cannot vocalize what is wrong. Additionally, I believe it is important that there are people willing to support animal welfare, and the care of all animals, wild and domestic. As a veterinarian, I can work in a variety of sectors help preserve biodiversity, improve the health of our planet, and help alleviate suffering for humans and other species. Veterinarians can work in companion animal medicine, food production medicine, research, public health, and wildlife medicine. In companion animal medicine veterinarians work to care for the pets that their human counterpart care for dearly. Pet owners see their pets as members of their family and it is important that veterinary medicine treats them in that manner. Work in food animal
