Becoming A Swim Coach

Improved Essays
Of all my community service activities, I enjoy being a swim coach the most. My coaching experience began when I had to stop swimming competitively due to a physical disability. I wanted to stay involved with the program, but didn’t know how. I was then offered a volunteer position as a coach. Little did I know that accepting the position would be such a life changing event.
I first realized my impact on the children I coach after helping one of them to accomplish an important goal. One of the swimmers comes from a less-than-desirable family situation, but he found a constructive outlet in swimming. He is a natural athlete and he has a magnificent work ethic. His most important goal was to qualify for zones, a highly competitive swim meet.

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital provides therapy, treatment, support, and programs for physically and developmentally disabled children and their families. Many of the children I teach are permanent residents of the hospital; many will never be able to walk, to speak or to focus for long enough to write an essay like this one. My primary volunteer contribution to this community is teaching swimming and water safety and helping to provide aquatic therapy to the children. They experience a freedom of movement in the water that is critical to their physical and mental well-being, which means that I have a significant responsibility. Bloorview is a very special place, and is known for its culture of acceptance, respect, and inclusivity.…

At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better.…

The article “Athlete Impression of a Character-Based Sports Program for Underserved Youth” written by Bean, Whitley & Gould (2014), examines the impact of a youth sport organization in developing life skills and character in youth. Research has been conducted previously on small recreation or sport based programs and also programs put on during school. Although, little has been done to look at extra-curricular activities outside of school and their effect on life skills development for the youth participating. A competitive sports program based out of Detroit, Michigan has a primary goal of developing life skills and character in underserved youth. The program is called the Think Detroit Police Athletic League (TDP).…

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

Occupational therapy enables people to live life to its fullest, no matter their age, history, or limitations. I find that really empowering because as an occupational therapist I can help someone achieve their goals, whether it is as simple as buttoning their shirt or as important as living on their own. Seeing that smile on their face when they accomplish a certain task after the countless struggles and setbacks they have endured is the greatest reward of all. The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…
