The recommended path to becoming a successful Software Developer is long but well worth the pay at the end of the journey. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Software developers usually have a bachelor’s degree, typically in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. A degree in mathematics is also acceptable. Computer science degree programs are the most common, because they tend to cover a broad range of topics.” This is not the only way; a lot of software developers have spent much of their personal time learning how to code. It’s important to get a degree however because it opens more advancement opportunities.
A lot of students after high school are forced to attend community colleges.

What job were you striving to get while you were in college?

I considered to going into Physical therapy, but I had a bad experience. I volunteered for a while at UNC’s burn center. I was always good at Sciences, so I always like physics and statistics. When I worked at a burn center there was this little girl, she was burned 80% of her body and we had to submerge her in a bath and scrub the burned skin away. I just couldn’t do that every day. Physical therapy isn’t just about helping people recover use, its dealing with all kinds of things. I always wanted to help people so health was sort of a natural fit.

What were your favorite classes in school?

My favorite classes were Linguistics, Psych, Chemistry, and Operations Research. I really didn’t like math as much. I was always good at Sciences, so I always liked physics and statistics.

What do you like the most about your job?

The reason I like my job so much now, is because I get to mentor and influence people, technology changes all the time which suits me because that’s where the artsy science stuff gets to come

Don’t be afraid of change and nurturing your networks of people. Don’t be afraid to reach out to ask for help because you will put so much on yourself, that you can get burnt out really, easy in these kinds of jobs. Remember, the world will not stop, if you stop. It’s kind of like the phoenix and the ashes, even if everything burns down, something will emerge out of that. Make sure you maintain a balance between work and home. I work really hard with my staff to make sure they are being healthy and get out to exercise of walk.
What are the people like that you work with?
They are awesome. I work with awesome people. The truth is that when you ask that question it reminds me of what I like the most about the people at my job. There is such diversity of people. I have old and young different cultures, Asian, middle eastern, black and white. I have all kinds of personality’s that work with me as well, there is no one personality type that stand out to me.
