Becoming A Resident Advisor

Decent Essays
Becoming a Resident Advisor would help me fulfill my passion of helping and caring for others. I enjoy being hospitable towards people, and helping them get on a right foot in life. I hope to bring my hospitality to the position, and help not only my floor, but the whole campus. I also to plan events that will be fun and encourage students to step out of their shell, and to bring out their full potential. I hope to grow with the students to bring out my full potential and become more involved and make a difference on campus. Becoming an RA would also help financially. Right now I rely on my parents to assist with the bills, and if I become a resident assistant we would not have to worry about financial problems. It would lift the stress off

The mission of the department of Housing and Residence Life is to “provide resources and opportunities for student learning and success by collaborating to build inclusive residential communities and experiences. I remember when I first moved into the dorms, I felt completely lost. I didn’t know where my classes were, I didn’t know where to get toilet paper, and I didn’t know where to put our trash. My RA’s goal was to help put all of these at ease and to make my transition a little easier. By helping the students acknowledge all of their resources, and by helping them solve their everyday problems, Resident Assistants are a prime example of the department of Housing and Residence Life mission.…

My first semester as a Residential Assistant has been an overall interesting, challenging, and defining experience, to say the least. Traversing through the early stages of the position, such as move-in, training, and meeting my residents, couldn’t have prepared me enough for the amazing experience that I have had thus far. Although I’ve had conversations with friends currently and previously in the position, and have had my own past experiences with RAs, I genuinely did not know what to expect when it was my turn to take on the job. This unfamiliarity with the job and uncertainty of what to expect, although daunting at first, were relieved very early on by realizing the impact I was making through my position. Several of the things that draw…

She was able to answer most of my questions and doubts. When given this assignment, my initial reaction was, “Oh… Well I guess I’ll just have to do it all over again.”…

Appiah in his writing Race, Culture, Identity: Misunderstood Connections talks about race and brings up an example of a garçon de café, also known as a waiter. Appiah says a person decides to become a waiter and within that choice is a set of expectations and situations where that person is expected to be a waiter. In the person’s place of work the waiter (garçon de café) dresses a certain way, greets people a certain way and puts plates of food and beverages in front of customers. In a different social situation these behaviors would not be appropriate. To bring it back to race Appiah says it would not make sense to ask someone who is employed as a waiter (garçon de café) if that is what they really are.…
