Becoming A Professional Dancer

Improved Essays
For most of my life, my successes had been involved around dance. I had to give up normalcy in order to dedicate all of my time to training. My dedication contributed to my acceptance to highly awarded ballet schools around the United States. However during my senior year, ballet has taken a backseat in order to let my academic interests flourish. After spending literal blood, sweat, and tears, to achieve the unrealistic standard of becoming a professional dancer, it may seem odd to give up it now. Nevertheless I have come to realize that dancing was never going to work out; my body could no longer handle the physical stress, and the cult like atmosphere of professional ballet drove me crazy. Yet to just stop doing something that has been

Something happened on my dance team this past summer where I received an award for “Most Improved Dancer”. I was feeling discouraged as well as confused on what I wanted to do involving dance in general. The support from my directors and teammates could not have put a bigger smile on my face. All of the claps, hugs, and high-fives meant so much to me. .I was filled with pure happiness, but had so much uncertainty on whether I wanted to stay committed or remove myself from this group.…

When I think about dance teams, I don't necessarily think of the dancing concept but rather the friendships and the memories made. Most people feel most confident and accustomed to what they live with everyday, making life changing decisions very difficult to make. Me being one. I danced on a Competitive Dance Team called Dance Dynamics, and never expected to ever leave. I was brought up a question by my former dance teacher asking if I ever considering being on my High School Drill team.…

Many times when we see someone succeeding in their leisure activity we say that they have a gift or talent for it. That is where this is coming from. Dancing wasn’t something I was taught to love or forced to become great at, it was something that in doing it, I naturally fell in love with and just felt internally right. While I am dancing, there is nothing else in my mind besides the dancing, not the time, not my homework, nothing else and I can just enjoy and focus on the activity on its own. Consequentially, I spent a lot of time doing it and became quite good at dancing, and there were many people out there who would criticize and be very jealous of me.…

Eating disorders creep around dance studios, waiting for the next victim to tightly latch on to. Society hears about eating disorders quite frequently, however the dance world encounters them almost every day. People who truly care about ballerinas and young women in the ballet world understand the struggle to avert dancers from eating disorders. When dancers are told they look “too womanly” a dancer’s mind automatically takes a hint to lose weight (Hamilton 28). Choreographers, directors, and manages repeatedly voice such a comment towards their dancers, pressuring dancers to do whatever they have to in order to please the people with the power to fire them.…

I am a quitter. At least, that’s what my artistic director wanted me to believe. May 2016 marked the conclusion of my final season as a professional ballerina. I went to my artistic director’s office for the annual contract meeting. As we evaluated the season-to-date and I was given the floor to express my future intentions, I explained my desire to leave the art, illustrating I wanted more in life, including a college education.…

“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I was introduced to the world of competitive dance in August of 2011 and ever since, dance has been the outlet for all of my emotions. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…

Between babysitting and my job at Toys R Us, I constantly find myself around children. As I’ve been told by teachers and band directors, I know I must act as an example so these kids strive for greatness. Rather than give into my inner demons and walk away from such opportunity, I give advice and direction to curious children who approach me. It’s a surreal moment when I tell children that although school isn’t the most pleasant or easy, it’s definitely worth all the stress and pain to be able to look back at end the school year and appreciate all of one’s accomplishments. I certainly remember this when I’m in marching band and find myself exhausted and struggling to stay motivated throughout the endless rehearsals.…

Private Dancer As I was added to the schedule early in the week, I was not quite prepared for how different things were on Friday night. First of all, there were so many more dancers on the floor. After a couple of hours, we transitioned to a rotation where two dancers are on stage at the same time. Each dancer basically has half of the stage; first song is performed around the back pole, second song the dancer moves up to the front of the stage while a new dancer joins them in the back.…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. Medicine is a practice which calls for just as much discipline, dedication, and drive.…

From my last year of study, there has not been much that has changed from my perception of ballet. So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. I want to improve in whatever way possible to make sure that I can keep on top of my technique, especially since I look forward to striving forward through this semester as a continuation of last semester. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus. Even though I have my strengths and weaknesses, I want to further myself this semester to grow as a dancer by breaking some old habits that are holding me back.…
