During this time, I was introduced to counseling psychology and found the opportunity for synthesis I had been seeking. When I applied to the University of Houston the second time, I was firm and purposeful in my goal: I was majoring not in “everything,” but in psychology – a field that integrates the liberal arts and health sciences – with the goal of becoming a therapist. In line with the principles of counseling psychology, I wish to integrate understandings of social context, environmental factors, and individual strengths and vulnerabilities to assist clients in “finding their niche” and adapting to their circumstances in ways that serve them well. I intend to take a positive psychology focus, offering preventive care and adaptive/growth strategies in addition to guidance in managing mental illness and psychological distress. More broadly, I would like to contribute to creating a society that does not stigmatize mental illness and that normalizes seeking psychological
