Becoming A Pediatric Oncologist

A lot of different factors add into my ability to succeed at Penn State, such as being intellectually curious. After taking Chemistry my freshman year, I took such a strong liking in the class and all of the topics covered, that I now want to continue those concepts at Penn State by majoring in Chemistry. I am also highly motivated to continue my education, so I can reach my ultimate goal of becoming a Pediatric Oncologist. A few years ago my cousin battled and won in his fight against cancer, so now I want to become a doctor to help kids like my cousin. This helps me to stay motivated, so that I can succeed as much as I can through my education. These along with many other factors can help me to persevere as a student at Penn State University.

Before addressing why Pitt is a good choice for me, I would like to review why I am a good choice for Pitt. The University of Pittsburgh values their “talented, diverse and high achieving students”, their “safe and healthy campuses”, their unique balance of “fun and camaraderie with internships and other learning opportunities outside the classroom”, and their focus on “developing students into global citizens” (University of Pittsburgh webpage, ‘Prospective Students’). I am a well-rounded student who places priority upon academics, as well as a broad array of performing arts extracurricular activities, over 300 hours of community service, several job experiences and religious organizations. Therefore, if admitted to The University of Pittsburgh, I would fit right in with the ardent and accomplished student body, just as I would benefit as a person and as…

If I would for any reason want to change my position, there are many opportunities for advancement that I could chose from. This doesn’t mean that I would get tired of what I do, but it’s good to know that there is other options out there that I could use my training and degree for. Finally, since I have already done a lot for this career, for instance, open houses, health days, and research, I feel that I have a pretty good understanding of exactly what it takes to be a pediatric nurse.…

Being a member of this distinguished society is what I have strived towards since elementary school. Watching presentations and hearing stories from individuals in high school from a young age (who were at the time active National Honor Society members), inspired the archetype that I aspired to be –the archetype of an individual who shares the four characteristics that National Honor Society stands for: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Throughout my high school career, I worked towards the scholarship aspect. Despite where I am currently, my freshman year had not gone as well as I hoped it would.…

Otherwise I will lose the goal I set when I first enrolled in college. We all have our roles in life, as husband or a father, a brother, sister, worker, an employer; we are committed to accomplish this role. So being a student in college is one more role we chose for our life, we added more burdens on our shoulders. Choosing this new role and accepting more burdens is a determination, a perseverance. The continuing hard work in college, succeeding in all tests, submitting all assignments in time, and graduating all this is determination, perseverance,…

I have known since the beginning of high school that I wanted to major in nursing in college. At first, I figured I would go to a larger school where the nursing program does not start until students enter their junior year, however, after I was exposed to the nursing profession through volunteering at St. Louis Children's Hospital, I decided I couldn't wait to get started. I learned how much compassion and wisdom nurses carried with them, and I realized that I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else. This thought is what initially drew me into Truman State University, as I loved the idea of entering the nursing program my very first semester on campus. I am certain Truman will prepare me to achieve my career goal of becoming a pediatric oncology nurse.…

The best college students learn very quickly that the best thing that they can do is never give up, discover something new every day, work with the community as best as they can and show great respect for the learning community. They also learn that service to the community is essential and they do this by helping others and making them stronger learners. Although Bain’s book does a very good job of explaining all of these values, the one that stands out to me is that of discovery. Discovery stands out because in order to learn you must find/discover something new every day in order to be the best learner that you can be. Stories that Exemplify Discovery…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…
