Before the end of my high school career I had witnessed individuals from groups around me participate in gang shoot outs, fights, distribution and usage of drugs. As I’ve seen my peers commit crimes and were introduced into the criminal system, I thought to myself that the negative effects brought by my peers has taken a substantial impact on our community. I questioned, if their own teachers and friends won't bother to help then who will? Troubled youth need a role model who can be strong willed to help them make a better future for themselves, search for a purpose in life, and won't give up on them like everybody else did. Despite a continuous increase with youth gang affiliations in underserved communities, there is still a scarcity of promising or effectual gang prevention and intervention programs offered by schools. One reason for the lack of programs has to do with the time and resource constraints that school administrators face. With limitations on resources school superintendents need to consider the “cost and benefits” of each possible intervention plan (GREAT). As a consequence to low intervention program, risk factors such as social disorganization, and poverty, low educational commitment…

Probation is an alternative to prison time, offered by the court during sentencing. So rather than doing hard time in a cell, the guilty party remains free - with certain stipulations. They vary by jurisdiction, but typically include paying a restitution fee, reporting to a probation officer, refraining from alcohol, being subject to drug tests and staying within geographic areas.…

"Prior to receiving a discharge on parole supervision, however, an inmate often must be granted early release by a parole board" (Connor, 2016, pp. 107-126). When it comes to placing convicted felons on probation, I believe that this should depend on the charge that individual was convicted of. For example, someone who has been convicted of murder should not be released with probation in my opinion. Even then, it should still depend on the small details of the case. Was that person defending themselves?…

The job I would like to see the responsibilities of would be the Juvenile Probation Officer. I think they have a really fun and exciting day, dealing with all the kids that have misbehaved. I would really like the job of just keeping care of kids, since the officers are adults and the kids are, you could say, violent and dishonest I believe it would make for an entertaining day. I have been in prison, not being arrested, of course, and it looks like it would be a cool place to work in. The highly debated process of parole refers to the early release of a convict before the end of their sentence due to favorable behavior. A similar concept referred to as Bail also refers to the early release of a prisoner, but this is usually with a payment made. This can occasionally require further court hearings and the payment is an assurance that the person will attend court at a later date. The Australian parole system is currently being debated as it is a common issue. Current tragic events such as the Brighton siege, Sydney siege, Bourke Street massacre and even the murder of Jill Meager have one similarity in common, they were all caused by a failing in the prison and parole system.…

    1. As more students slip between the cracks of our education system, the school to prison pipeline only becomes solidified. While it is every teacher’s dream to prevent this path for his/ her students, it’s nearly impossible to guarantee it will never occur. I think the most important preventative action teachers can take though, is dedicating to each student the time and attention they deserve.…
