When I was younger, I wanted to be a fashion designer, a cake decorator, and a tattoo artist. Now that I’m closing in on the end of my senior year, things have become more serious. About four years ago, my youngest sister was born, that’s when I realized that I wanted to be a nurse. Becoming a nurse is one of my biggest goals, I loved the thought of being able to take care of people and doing hands on work.
I’ve struggled with debating on whether I want to take a year off after I graduate from high school or if I should go to college right after high school. Growing up in a single-parent home, my mother has been the biggest influences on me. She has taught me to be independent, work hard and never give up. My mother is the one who has encouraged

I have learned so much, from how to assess a medical patient to a trauma patient. It’s a challenging class, I’ll admit. But it has hands-on work skills that are preparing me for what might be brought into the hospital. We were given an amazing opportunity to observe in the ER for 12 hours. That was probably one of the best experiences I’ve had. Just to work in the hospital setting for a short time, made me excited for my future. This has made me realize that this is what I really want to do.
Another goal would be to become a traveling nurse. I would love to travel the world and help people who need it the most, and that maybe can’t afford treatment. Even if I didn’t get paid, I would still do it. Them getting the help they need is enough for me.
After high school, I plan to attend South Dakota State University (SDSU) for nursing. I hope that after college, I will get the chance to work at either Avera McKennan or Sanford Hospital. I really wanted to specialize in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), but I don’t want to be a nurse that only specializes in one thing, I want to be able to go anywhere that I’m needed.
