My mom went back to school when I was a kid to get a degree and become a Medical Laboratory Technician. I didn’t really know what exactly she would be doing as someone with that job title, I always thought she was the one all the patients hated that poked them with needles to draw their blood but I found out that was the phlebotomist’s job. So for this project I chose to find out what it is exactly that my mom does, what she likes and doesn't like about her job, etc. I spent a day with my mom at work and got to learn all about what she does and how the lab operates. She told me about all the different departments within the lab, what each one is responsible for, and what she is in charge of. I got to see what a typical work day is like for

I had a spectacular day! Census was very low so there wasn’t much to do as far as case management, so Jamie and I got to spend some time just talking about things and why things are done the way they are. It was nice not rushing from patient to patient and just doing things without really understanding why something is done the way it is done and why. I knew the social worker at New Hope Rehab walked out last week and I decided to put myself out there and asked about spending some of my hours helping to fill the void of their missing social worker.…

For my something new project, I chose to do needlework and sewing. My mom brought the idea of doing needlework along with sewing because I would be able to learn how to do different stitches and make something decorative for my room. Currently, I am not sure what I will specialize in as a MLT, however, I hope to figure that out once I get hands on experience…

Some of the most important skills I learned on the job, such as the importance of being organized. So many co-workers I’ve worked with take so long to do any assignment, and it’s because they’re so disorganized. They don’t even know where their scissors are, and they need to hunt for a stapler.…
