The text “Beyond the Yellow Highlighter: Teaching Annotation Skills to Improve Reading Comprehension” written by Carol Porter-O’Donnell explains the importance of annotating readings in order to gain a deeper understanding. Most students will read the surface of a passage, without following up with questions or a discussion. Using annotations will benefit the student by teaching them how to critically think and become more active readers. By annotating the readers will take breaks to write down their thoughts, questions, or explaining what they have read so far. Doing this will help the students develop better writing skills and make reading higher level texts easier to read.…

I like to create charts and outlines about the topic and then turn them into sentences that I will put in my essay. This method works for me because when I do the diagrams or chart I already put things in order from the start and all I have to do after is put it in a sentence. What I do is little similar to what Anne Lamott described in her article but she seems to have better results than my…

Next, I consult all the materials given, or collected by me, to begin to form an idea about what I want my paper to state. Then I start my outline. Outlining is a pretty simple process for me it usually includes headings that state the main idea of the paragraph with bullet points of supporting detail.…

In this course, I learned about writing steps like making a draft before you begin and not to write what you feel in your essay. I also learned about great note taking techniques. Today I learned about punctuation, pronouns, sentence errors and run-on sentences, Example: I love to write papers I would write one every day if I had the time. Over the years, I have had to write many different forms of formal documents. In elementry school, I remember being taught to map my ideas when trying to generate topics to write about. It worked very well for me at first because it helped me visually. Since then, my writing process has changed as well as my reasons for writing. While I was in the military, I frequently had to fill out different documents and official notes that would be passed along my Chain of Command.…

Personally, outlining has been the best option and I can see the difference in my writing. Section B is a great example of how planning has improved my writing. Section B is entitled “Clear and Crisp: Lines Reveal America’s not so secret views”. This was the first writing assignment that I outlined the entire paper and mapped out every idea. This not only saved me time, but it allowed me to get every idea out clearly and have a concise thesis and theme.…

Makayla. This person relied too heavily on her Sequence learning pattern and could not finish her work in time. If she takes a moment to look over the project or test she is working on, and uses Confluence to get the bigger picture of the task she is up against, I think it would help her manage her time better. She can spot the questions she knows for certain and get them completed, allowing her the time to get back to the problem she is trying to figure out. This would ensure that she didn’t miss out on her chance to finish more of the test, on the questions she knew, rather than leaving it blank because she was stuck on one that she didn’t know.…

I personally disagree. I have a wide variety of note taking styles, and know what works for me. Most of the time we used planning maps or just wrote down a few ideas and went on from there to write our papers. We never really spent a whole day on planning and putting our ideas on paper like most English classes. I also never really annotated my books when I read them because I don’t understand what annotating does. Most of the time my English teacher would tell us what to annotate or highlight or circle. If my teachers would of never told us I would probably rarely annotate because I don’t see the point of doing it.…
