Why Are You Here Essay

The question is posed, “Why are you here?” I understand clearly why this is a question this university asks every student who comes through its doors. I know they ask this because it is unclear in our society, why we need a college education. Many sources say that college degrees are useless and I have to agree with them. That one piece of paper is useless, as are most things in life, if the person who has it does not understand how to use it. “Why are you here?” is designed to get you to ask yourself if you are a person who knows how to use a degree. I knew what I wanted a degree to do for me, but I was unaware of how to use it until I read, Becoming a Learner by Matthew L. Sanders. I am here to get my degree that will get my foot in the door at the jobs I want, but also to learn how to keep those jobs and what will be expected from me. I am here to better my life …show more content…
Just because your major is what you intend to do, it does not mean that you won 't need the skills from the other professions. These three working together is what makes this a university instead of just a technical school. The university is using these three parts to change you into that educated person who understands more then just what they intend to do, but how to be on a higher level and use that degree to its highest potential. My own reasons for being in college and coming to USU are pale in comparison to the design of who I could be. I want that for myself, for my family, and for my career to become a true learner. To become a valued member of society by following this design and pushing myself to become greater. So, what is the purpose of a college education as the title asks? To me the purpose is to become a better person. That is truly what I hope to achieve here at
