Having a brother with disabilities has provided me with some experience in working with children that has disabilities and that children with disabilities requires more care and attention. Although my brother can be a handful at times, he has taught me many things. For example, patience and to be more open minded. Even though my brother has many limits because of his disabilities he never fail to surprise me with what he can do. From my own experience I learned that putting children with disabilities into a strict category on what they can or cannot do limits what they can actually achieve, which is similar to what I have read in class.
My goal as a teacher I want to make students with special needs feel welcome in my classroom. To do that in the beginning of the class and with the approval of the school as well as the parents I want the students with disabilities talk about what their disabilities so as a class we can embrace the difference and try to understand what the student is going through. As a class we can play games has a similar effect on how the student with disabilities feel. To foster this in my classroom, in the beginning of the semester I will have my students write down something they like, their hobby, something they are looking forward to learn, and what they want to do in the class.
