Introverted individuals in particular exemplify how individuals keep a facade of themselves to protect their identities from the harsh critiques and unrealistic expectations of society. Shy, quiet, reserved: all those terms describe introverts; however, in some cases people consciously choose to act in such a way that averts attention and scrutiny. In school, societal pressures demand competition between peers for academic achievement; it demands conforming to a set standard of appearance; it demands acting different to fit in. Moreover, students deviate from these norms in self-selected societies such as teams or clubs. Therefore, selected communities encourage introverted individuals to embrace their unique identities and behave without restraint.

In terms of school, “there [are] these conception that [you] have to be this way, or act this way, or dress this way”(Kelly) to fit in. The idealistic image controls the lives of individuals and consumes them. Those influences possess the innate ability to control those will the strongest will. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Piggy–characters who assert their own identities fall victim to the influences of society when mob mentality overpowers their tenacity. After the two take part in murdering their former friend, Simon, they attempt to make excuses for actions they committed due to mob mentality: “Did you [not] see what we did–what they did..it was an accident..he asked for it..[but] we got to forget this”(Golding, 157). Instead of recognizing the deed committed, they distance themselves from the situation, they condemn the society for its brute nature, yet they fail to accept their part in making it that way. Ultimately, the same truth applies to school, individuals may try to ignore the pressures of school, or try to change themselves, but either way society results from how each individual acts, or rather how they do not act. Nonetheless, robotics exemplifies the positive result of individuals controlling the environment. In the words of a member of the robotics team: “the environment is created from [the] mentors, there is this ideology that everyone 's goal and ambition is to create a killer robot”(Kelly) therefore, that common objective consolidates the interconnected relationships among teammates and the overall team dynamics. Fundamentally, “the sense of unity comes from sense of membership, you are apart of a society without barriers”(Kelly) and since “[the] team is more of a family... because of that close family bond we have as a team [the personal identities] are allowed to shine through”(Kelly).
