The purpose of an honors program is to provide an opportunity for academically motivated students, such as myself, to challenge themselves. I believe that such an opportunity is available to any self motivated student seeking opportunities beyond the classroom, despite social status. Personally, I was attracted to the Natural Sciences Program because of the integrated clinical and research experiences early on in the curriculum. One should recognize that these programs go in depth, hence not everyone is willing to commit to the hard work required by the program.…

    Honors Program Reflection

The Honors Program allows me to be easily submersed in my studies and engage in discussions with students and professors who are similarly immersed in their studies. There is an immense difference in participating in a class where everyone comes prepared and has profitable insight and opinions in the material and a class where the only one who cares and came to class prepared is someone you must peer into a reflection to see. Last semester, for example, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the readings and discussions in Colloquium in the Humanities. I would come to class with a handful of thoughts, readings, and experiences and leave with an abundance. If I ever came to class with a preconceived notion, my thoughts would either transform in…

Being halfway through the first semester of freshman year can be a strange time. For many students, it can be the point in which the allure of being a college student begins to wear off and reality begins to set in—classes are difficult, living with a roommate might not be as great as it initially seemed, being away from family and friends can be really tough, forming friendships that are as strong as the ones left at home is not an easy task, and for some reason, it seems like everybody is getting sick. The mid-first semester crisis can have a large influence on students, and that impact can prove to be harmful if not addressed. As a facilitator, I believe it is incredibly important to keep an eye out for all of my students and to respond…
