I have been one of the directors of a charity called SouthWest Kids for a while, but during the last couple years, the charity’s services had become almost non-existent. However, after SouthWest Kids received some donations, I became motivated to restart the charity’s efforts in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. SouthWest Kids and I teamed up with ACH Child and Family Services, which has a youth emergency shelter in Fort Worth, and now SouthWest Kids provides dinner to the youth in the shelter. While catering dinner was a success, I wanted to involve more of the community in helping these children, and therefore contacted TCU SPARK to join SouthWest Kids in providing dinner and activities for the youth shelter. After interacting with the youth at the emergency shelter, I learned how important it is to have strong institutions and organizations, like ACH Child and Family Services and TCU, that can support those in need. Larger institutions like ACH and TCU also help smaller organizations like SouthWest Kids. When a community has individuals, like me, or groups of individuals, like SouthWest Kids, coordinating with other supporting institutions, like TCU and ACH, the community strengthens and then is able to support those who need help, like child victims of abuse. Physicians, and their larger supporting clinics and hospitals, act as a place of service and support for the community. My desire to become a physician stems from the realization that as a doctor I can help those in need in the same way that I provide a service to the children in the
