A coach as to be able to have a good, and healthy relationship with their player. A coach needs to be able to make a play buy into what the coach his telling. The player need to understand that coach is trying his best to help the player for the greater good of the team the player must be able to put their ego’s behind them for the team to succeed. This task cannot be acquired if the player does not believe in the coach and vise versa. A coach needs to have a ratio or balance when coaching. If one had too much tough love the player might think that you don’t like them, but on the other hand if one never gets on the player’s case one will get walked all over. When I was in high school we had an offensive line coach that just constantly yelled, and punished the students with conditioning. He never made the kids feel that he was proud of them and believed in them. Over the course of the football season we had 6 plus line men quit on the JV and varsity combined. It made it extremely difficult for us to when games because we had barley any personal. A good example of coaching relationship with a student is the one my brother had with his defensive end. This kid was a thug, he would sell drugs, and had an extreme temper problem. The relationship my brother Brian built with ended up turning his life around. Players and coaches need to be able to depend on each other to succeed. Typically, when student play football they are faced with a promise to themselves, to their coach, and the team. This promise is that they need to do what were they can in efforts to better the team. This a very broad statement. This promise covers areas of all sorts. A student is expected to refrain from selling and taking drugs. They are expected to be model students in class. They are expected to pass all their classes. They are expected to attend school every day. After making this promise, they need to be honest with themselves and their coaches that they are doing the right things in class and making the right decisions out of class. A coach must be honest as well though. A coach makes a promise that he will do his best to make a student ready and put them in a position succeed. A coach needs to work with kids during school as well after school. They need to do drills with that will develop the player. They too need to scout enemy schools to try and to give their student the advantage. The coach has to be honest with her or himself, and be able to be honest with the student that he or she has done all he can to put the student in the best possible position they can to make them succeed.
