My Strength Of Public Speaking Essay

Growing up in a small town, I was never the one to stand out in a crowd. I would usually stand in the distance, while my little brother and sister shined to be spontaneous like always. To me, public speaking has always been one of my biggest weaknesses in school. Because of this I would not describe myself as shy, rather anxious to preform a speech. This year one of my main goals is to make my weakness one of my strengths. Public speaking is something that I will not be able to not hide from throughout my everyday life and career as a Psychologist. By attending class and getting as involved as I can, preparing more, and getting to know the crowd I will be presenting to, I will get started on my path to becoming a better public speaker. Once I start applying these goals, I will be able …show more content…
Getting involved and becoming familiar with my professor, their expectations, and with the classroom’s settings will make everything seem like less of a surprise and much less stressful. Presenting in a room that seems new while being graded by a teacher you don’t know much about is a recipe for disaster. Once I spend more time in the room I will be able to look around and feel more comfortable with where I am. This will make it much easier than going up to the front of the class and looking out and feeling like it is my first day of school. Giving a speech to a professor I am not familiar with is another way I can set myself up to fail. By going to class everyday, I will learn more about my professor as a person and their expectations, such as how they grade. Asking questions in class and attending some office hours when I need extra help will help me get to know the instructor on a more personal level. It will make getting involved in class and giving speeches effortless. By applying these steps to my speech ethic, these will help me prepare myself much more

I would consider myself moderately anxious about public speaking. I remember the first few communication apprehensions I experienced in my personal and work life. With my personal experience, I was at church when I shared a testimony with the bible study. With my work encounter, I had to conduct status updates for two areas during project implementations and testing phases with a large group. In both situations, my heart pounded loudly right before I spoke and when the words came out of my mouth, I felt like I had to speak quickly like Speedy Gonzalez!…

Once I’m able to do this, I think that skill will carry over past the class and help me in my specific career path which is one of the most important things about the class to me. Another idea that the book mentioned that I think could be good for me is using movement to minimize anxiety. “You don’t have to stand perfectly still behind the podium when you deliver a speech. Walk around as you make some of your points. Movement relieves tension and helps hold the audience’s attention.”…

One of the best things to help me, which happened to be this school year, was my effective speaking class. I went into the class with the I just need to get this over with attitude, but I had an excellent instructor that made me feel very comfortable. In the beginning, I went to class and would not even eat dinner because of how nervous I was for delivering a speech and by the end of the class I was fine I was not that nervous at all, I only had the healthy amount of nervousness that everyone needs to give a great speech. One other thing I have not mastered is asking for…

On my last speech, I discussed why I believe elite college athletes should be paid. I was very satisfied with how my speech went. I was able to improve on my speaking because I worked on the body language portion of my speech increasingly, I was more confident going into the speech, and I feel I persuaded my audience to agree with me. As I prepared for my speech, I worked on my body language and vocal variation.…

I think I want to start writing my speech as soon as possible so I have more time to write it. The more time I have to write it and practice it, the better my speech will be when I present it. I have to try to space out the time I prepare for my speech and not cram everything in the last week and I will be one hundred percent prepared. Having more time for preparing myself, I will be able to use more coping techniques to calm myself, so then I will be confident. This class is helping me a lot…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

Although I feel that I did an adequate job on the group project one of the most important skills that I desperately need to improve on is learning to present in front of an audience. We had two assignments this semester that revolved around speaking in front of our class, the first being a speech by ourselves and the second being the group presentation. I am a cheerleader, so being in front of crowds does not bother me but what makes me the most nervous is when I have to speak in front of others by reading something I have written or completed. In the group presentation I was not as nervous since I was not alone in speaking to the class, but on the speech I did I was overcome with anxiety. Being able to talk in front of others is my biggest setback, but I am certain that with enough practice, patience, and preparation I will be able to calmly give a speech over any subject that I am required to do.…

I strongly dislike public speaking, but I am working to improve my skills in that area because I know how much it’s needed in the workplace. There were many of my classmates who are graduating at the same time as me and it seems like we all have a lot to improve. We need more practice and more willing to put what we have learned in the past into practice. I know that during our college careers, we have heard from different people about what we should do when we are giving a presentation, but it looks like we did not take it seriously and now we are facing the consequences of giving a presentation like a high school student and not as an almost professional…

I sometimes get nervous about what people are thinking about my speech when I am giving it but if I don’t judge people from the audience then I will have the mindset when I am on stage that people from the audience are not judging me. Lastly, I think that I will be able to get up in front of people and give a speech without getting extremely nervous. I haven’t had much experience with speaking in front of big groups but hopefully by the end of this semester I will be very good at it without having any nervous feelings if someone asked me to give a public…
