In a day and age when NFL players spend far too much of their time criticizing owners, GMs and coaches, it was a wonderful gesture to see New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. pay homage to Head Coach Tom Coughlin after the couch announced he was stepping down from his post after 12 seasons.
Prior to announcement being made, Beckham was heard saying “I love Coach Coughlin. He’s always going to be my coach.” When pressed about how hard the coach had been on him in the past, Beckham responded “It’s been great since the day I met him. Initially a younger player would immaturely think coach is always on you. He’s always on you, he’s always on you ... why is he always on you? Initially, I thought it’s because he wanted to be."
He later added “It was growing up, maturing, and learning that it was because he knew what was in you, he wanted to bring the best out. And he was going to do everything that he could to do that. Along the journey, it’s been great with Coach as far as growing and learning each other and teaching me things, just how to be a man.” …show more content…
It's not often that a second-year player who has already achieved star status is able to take a step back and recognize that coaches coach because they want to help players become the best players they can be. In Beckham's case, Coughlin's tough love has certainly paid off as the All-Pro wide receiver finished the season with 96 receptions for 1,450 yards and 13 touchdowns, a terrific follow-up to a rookie season with similar
