The controversy over the homosexual elements in a Disney movie – Beauty and the Beast – was furious last month. People who against the homosexuality blamed that it promotes the concept of homosexual love to kids, which is inappropriate in some people’s mind. We can see that the public treats Disney movies as an important socializing tool. They generally think that children can be easily influenced by the elements of the movies. It seems fascinating to understand how people correlate Disney movies and gender issues together. Therefore, we have conducted a simple interview with 4 respondents from different age groups to understand how Disney movies affect children’s mindsets and behaviors in terms of gender issues. Socialization is the process by which society’s values and norms are taught and learned. It is a two-fold process that a person internalizes the culture and develops a sense of self, and then learn together as one interacts with other people. One of the socialization mechanisms is called observational learning. It involves learning by watching the actions and behaviors of others. In this case, Disney movies become socializing tools, which reflect the social norms and values in a certain period of time. Because of the ideal plots and images in the Disney movies, children can easily get influenced, treating those princes or princesses as one of their role models. They would try to imitate the dress code, behaviors or even the personality of the characters. Even though some of the children hate these imitation, they are told that they should treat those images as standard to learn, which is a mainstream. It explains how Disney movies, or even media, affect us. From Mr. & Mrs. Wong’s responses, we can see that Mr. Wong thinks that Disney movies as a socializer bring negative consequences to his daughter, while Mrs. Wong feels the movies can help socializing her daughter in a positive …show more content…
There are many socializers around us, including family. People always say that children need to be protected from sensitive elements, which can be easily misunderstood by the children. Absolutely, children may not be mature enough to do critical thinking. Guidance from adults is essential to let children understand the messages behind. We may give suggestion to them for doing selection from various mirrors, but not break their mirrors that are abnormal in our eyes. I hope that we all can become a unique social self, not a replicated
