Looking at me, you may not believe that I went through an Eminem phase. It all started when I was babysitting one night and 8 mile, a movie loosely based on the life of Marshal Mather’s better known as Eminem, came on (don’t worry, the kids were already sound asleep). I loved the movie and the music in it so much that I started researching Eminem’s life. I mean the man is a lyrical genius how can you not become slightly obsessed with him at some point in your life. I started listening to his music. I bought all of his albums. Every last one. And out of all 19 albums, the song Beautiful is my favorite. This song stands out from his others, because there is more emotion in this one compared to his other work. Me and Maddy were instantly best friends, we told each other everything, basically lived at each others houses, we were inseperable. One of our favorite ways to kill time was to drive around in our beat up cars and blast Eminem. We knew all the lyrics to all the songs. We bought Eminem shirts and swore that if he ever came anywhere near North Dakota that we would drop everything to go see him. Unfortunately as we started to grow up we started to drift apart too. Maddy’s did not come from the best home, far from it actually. Her step mom was mentally abusive and her real mom was in and out of rehab. To cope Maddy started hanging out party animals and started drinking on the weekends. I started joining academic clubs and becoming the super nerd that I am today. Nowadays we hardly speak to each other and when we do there is always the awkward feeling of two people who used to know each other inside and out. Listening to Beautiful brings me back to the days when me and Maddy were so close we were basically sisters. It takes away the separation that has grown between
