He began to suspect Montag due to his uncanny behavior, having a curiosity about the books. Therefore, Beatty lectures Montag on how dangerous books were. For instance, when Beatty was lecturing Montag, he said, “I’ve had to read those few books in my time, to know what I was about, and the books say nothing” (Ray Bradbury 62). Beatty used his own experience with books to try manipulate Montag to stay away from books. Therefore, when Montag reads his first book, he said “the captain was right”, however this made Montag even more curious about books. Beatty has a leadership ability because he disciplines his co-workers by confusing them on their curiosity and thereby manipulating to forget about those curiosities. Furthermore, Beatty is resourceful of his surroundings because he used quotes from the books Montag brought to confuse him. For example, “Words are like leaves… much fruit of sense beneath is rarely found… what do you think Montag?’’(Ray Bradbury 106). This means Beatty spends his time quoting books from authors to confuse people and this tells us that Beatty has knowledge about books.
