Beats is a producer of audio equipment. It focuses on three segments in audio equipment. Personal audio (headphones, earphones and speakers), Beats audio (audio software with tailored hardware in collaboration with other companies like Chrysler and HP) and Beats Music (online music streaming service, currently still in development).
Beats Electronics started to sell headphones in 2006 and is therefore a relatively new competitor on the high-end audio-system market. There is a clear difference in user’s circumstances. The earphones and headphones are exclusively for individual use. The earphones are specifically designed for simplicity and ‘one the move’, where the headphones are mainly designed for users required perfect sound quality and with strongly identifying himself with the ‘Beats-family brand’. The speakers are designed for use in a group environment with a need of ‘experiencing the music together’. All products are designed for the same target group. The project lifecycle is in such a way scheduled that the cooperation between different parties responsible for certain parts of the design process is clearly defined, but the process will not suffer from a total loss of knowledge when in the future one of the partners will be eliminated. In the design of the headphones, there can be made a distinction between three aspects of the headphones. Style, in which the product development team strongly has to communicate with the market department. Sound is one of the success factors for Beats by Dr. Dre. The sound is a strongly technical issue in which electrical engineering as well as sound engineers need to be involved.
