Beatrice Character Foil

The characters in a book are what turns a publication into a story, and without them the book would lack quality and meaning. Any story can have characters, but what makes it stand out is when the character’s are different, and that is why Beatrice and Hero are the perfect character foil. The play, ”Much Ado About Nothing” by William Shakespeare, starts with a group of soldiers visiting a small town in Italy, and in that group of soldiers lie Claudio and Benedick, the lovers of Hero and Beatrice. Right when Claudio sees Hero, he falls madly in love with her. After some slight mishaps, they get engaged, but at this time Beatrice and Benedick are still at each other's throats. After a few wedding problems, Benedick and Beatrice finally declare their love for each other and get married alongside Hero and Claudio. In the play, Hero is the respectable and polite maiden just wishing she could have a husband to love. On the other hand, Beatrice is a stubborn and feisty woman who could do without a husband until the day she died. Even though they are complete opposites, they found ways to love each other as friends and they both highlight their characteristics as well. Both of the characters struggled with different problems and even though they reacted differently, the story still played out stronger than ever. Without character foils in the books we read, there wouldn’t be a great story line, only a dull plot repeating itself. Hero and Beatrice may be different, but their differences help their characters grow and develop throughout the span of the book resulting in an amazing story.
