Beat Meeting Reflection

As I arrived to class on Wednesday 25, 2017 my professor Peter Saint John decided that we needed a bigger room due to the fact that we have a lot of students in such as a small classroom. Therefore, with his suggested and other students in the classroom, we decide to go upstairs to a bigger room on the 3rd floor of Magnuson center. As we were going upstairs there was a meeting going on in the building and my professor decided to check it out and had a conversation with the people involved. The meeting that was taking place in the room was a Beat meeting or CAPS and its purpose is to have people around the neighborhood attend to state any sort of crime or unlawful acts going on in their community. The meeting is a great place for the community and law enforcement officers to interact. The meeting began at 7:30 Pm and was supposed to finish by 9:00 Pm. So, after my professor speaking to the law enforcement officers, they mentioned that we should attend one that they were going to be at Mayfair church on Pulaski and Foster right in front of the …show more content…
Others that live in the community also stated the same and made the complaint a community concern. I found this interesting because the area she was speaking about is near a school which is dangerous for kid’s safety and people around the neighborhood. The sergeant quickly took notes on this case and provided feedback to prevent future driving violators. The solution that seems more effective was having a police car on the street where this is happening to hopefully slow the cars down. As a fellow driver around this neighborhood, I have witnessed many cars in this neighborhood not following proper driving laws. I think the community providing this information for the police will hopefully improve this situation around this

On Thursday 03/29/2018 at approximately 2205 I was instructed by Lt. E. Gonzalez #122 to assist Officer E. Hernandez #216 at Marina Hall (located at 6515 Ocean Drive Corpus Christi which is on Texas A&M University-Corpus Christ) with talking with the neighborhoods. Upon arrival I activated body camera #5 and made contact with an individual by the name of Austin Lucero (student/resident) who lives next door in apartment #2121. It is stops like these that create tension between the police and citizens. This ticket was dropped, but still creates a distrust from my local police department. Although in the case of Whren v. U.S in 1996, the supreme court decided that police had the power to stop for any offense against the driving code. This is incredibly easy to find, leading to officers pulling over citizens for little offenses just to explore their personal business. Thus, this single case granted the permission for officers to conduct investigatory stops…

Traffic stops for anybody, can make you or the officer nervous. A police officer’s job is dangerous no matter what, but an officer getting hurt or killed is too scary to fathom. Every traffic stop no matter how simple can take a turn for the worst, there is no such thing as a routine stop anymore. Of course, not everyone who gets pulled over is hiding something, a criminal or being a butthead. But the fear of the stop turning deadly has to be running through their heads as a what if situation and that is why I believe most police officers need to be safe and ready for anything.…

On February 7, 2018, at 5:30 p.m., I attended the meeting that I had scheduled with Magdala. At the meeting, I read off my pages of notes that I had constructed about Laundry View and the benefits that it can bring to students if such a portal became accessible on the WSSU website. I also showed her the picture and the video of the Wash Alert system that UNCG has, to give a visual on how Laundry View would look and how it works. Magdala then proceeded to go to the Laundry View website and tried to register Winston-Salem State University, but the link that was sent to her email did not work. Moreover, it did not provide the names of the residence hall on campus.…

This was the first time in a long time that I felt welcomed into a community of people whom I had just met. I arrived thirty minutes before the meeting and spoke to Louis, the meeting advisor for the night. I let him know I was a student who was taking a class on Addiction and wanted to know if it was okay if I sit in the meeting that night. When I finished explaining he was more than welcome to share any information of the program with me and offered me a newcomer’s packet.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

This course has challenged the way I think and deepened my understanding of the problem-solving process, which has enabled me to perceive issues from new perspectives, I once would not have considered. Additionally, it has also allowed me to make explicit and authentic connections between the course content and my…
