Themes that were most prevalent in Beast of the Southern Wild were individual vs. society and loss of innocence. Hushpuppy feels as if the whole world is against her. She often discusses her fate as being conquered, brought to extinction, and having her legacy live on through story. It is believed that Hushpuppy is about 5 years old. She is taught mistrust towards society because her father instills survival in the Bathtub to her as the number 1 priority and that outside society threats that survival. Wink contributes further to instilling mistrust by discussing the people on the other side of the levy in a condescending manner.
