Beast Of The Southern Wild Analysis

Many concepts are presented in Beast of the Southern Wild. The concept of family is that it is the family’s role in taking care of you. The relationship between parent and child is that the child does as the parent say. This philosophy can result in shame and doubt because the parent interferes with autonomy (Lesser & Pope, 2011, p. 67). Healthy maturation processes should establish room for children to learn on their own. Wink enforces Hushpuppy to learn the Bathtub’s way of life and to fend for herself because he is aware that he is dying. However, she can grow up to experience complications with autonomy in later years because she was not allowed much time to develop her own sense of self. Everyone is expected to stick together and look out for one another. However, in the Bathtub is easy to experience identity vs. role diffusion because the expectations are heightened due to their way of life (Less & Pope, 2011, p. 67). Adults in the Bathtub do not shield the children from certain behavior such as drinking, language, or topics of conversation. Everything is out in the open in the Bathtub. Survival is key in the Bathtub. Residents have to know survivals skills, such as building and hunting in order to make it. There is no room for the week in the Bathtub. Food is a major issue if survival tactics are not in place. If there is no food to hunt then there can be do eating because that is one of the only ways to access food in the Bathtub. Throughout Hushpuppy’s five years of life she has experience much more than the typical five year old. Viewing the film it can be easily looked at as Hushpuppy the survivor. However, it is Hushpuppy the five year old little girl who is neglected and forced to grow up too fast because of her social conditions that she did not have a choice
