BCOM 103: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

Part A

1) Arrive organized and on time

 Arrive 10-15 minutes before your interview.
 Determine your mode of transportation (bus, car, taxi) and know how long it will take to get to your interview.
 Have all information and resources you are taking to the interview (portfolio, resume) organized and ready to present.

This will communicate that you are organized, prepared and that the interview is a high priority in your life. It lets the interviewer know you would take the job seriously. You want to make a good impression and not waste the company’s time. This will help you create a good impression and it demonstrates that you are responsible.

2) Dress Appropriately

 Dress professionally and appropriately for the position (skirt and blouse or pant suit).

 Don’t exaggerate your smile or hold it for to long.
 Smile during the interview when it is appropriate.

When you smile, you are communicating that you are approachable and friendly. It is also considered polite and creates a positive environment. You will seem unfriendly and closed off if you are constantly scowling. An exaggerated smile however, may come across as insincere or show a lack of understanding.

6) Make direct eye contact

 Look the interviewer in the eye when he/she is speaking, but don’t stare.
 Do not let your eyes wander around the room during the interview.

Good eye contact communicates that you are listening to and focused on what the interviewer is saying. You will appear more interested and confident. If your gaze constantly wanders you will appear nervous, shy or uninterested. It may be interpreted as disrespect. If no eye contact is made when you are answering a question, your answer could be seen as dishonest.

7) Listen attentively and show interest

 Speak when spoken to.
 Do not interrupt.
 Do not ramble on about unrelated topics
 Relax but be attentive.
