An example of this is the BC SPCA (The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), An animal protection organization in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The BC SPCA created a commercial that aired in 2006 all over America in hopes of persuading their audience.
The commercial shows a series of short videos of sad, injured animals in cages and crates. While those clips are being shown, the song ‘In the Arms of an Angel’ by Sarah McLachlan is being played in the background. Logos which is logic is shown by giving statistics; “Every single hour in BC, an animal is violently abused” “Three thousand animals were rescued last year” “For hundreds of others, help came too late” Quickly the clips stop and the scene turns into Sarah McLachlan sitting in a room while petting a large dog next to her. McLachlan is petting the dog on camera to show the viewers that she cares for the dog, this small gesture of petting the dog plays an impact on the person viewing the commercial because automatically the person watching would feel good to see her petting a dog that is not getting abused. The BC SPCA is the organization of course backing the commercial up. They are a non-profit organization that accepts donations. Their website gives donation information and annual costs. This ad lacks logos because it provides no factual evidence behind the ads main claim; however, the rhetorical appeal that is used the most is pathos, the appeal to emotion. The music in the background is a key factor in provoking emotion from the audience, it makes them stop whatever they were doing and look up at the TV. At the start of the ad, the first sound that is heard is birds chirping however soon after, as the animal factories are being built, the music holds a very depressing and sorrowful tone. This sudden change of sound already has grasped the audience's attention without even seeing the ad yet, simply by listening to the sounds. Next the ad shows the building of the animal factories and slowly it escalates from a small house for one pig to a city of factories and roads that overtake the concept of nature.…

Budweiser does show a logos appeal, when the dog is waiting for the owner to arrive back home. It is very understood that loved ones do care if you are being safe and make it home after a night out. It is very logically if you are to be out drinking, that you don’t drive. The feeling the dog has on the audience, or the whimpering sounds when showing his emotions, generates the pathos appeal a win, and is the best option when constructing and producing their PSA. In the PSA, Someone Waits for You at Home, DON’T DRINK & DRIVE, created by Budweiser, has an overpowering pathos appeal, leaving their ethos and logos less effectual in the AD on the issue of drinking and driving.…

This commercial is also, in a way, made in a skit format, leaving room for a lot of improvs to be done. This is smart logically because now the audience can take a different look at the commercial and have more of what real reactions look like and how this mother would really tackle an everyday mishap. Therefore, the commercial is even more effective because we are getting real reactions from people who are viewing this commercial. Also, because of it being left to improv and showing the real reactions, we get real emotions and that leads into how pathos is shown and used throughout the…
