Explain the concept of networking in organisations and outline its relationship with leadership development.

Networking is a great asset for a business to implement into their organisation, as well as assisting with leadership development. Ibarra and Hunter (2007) justify this when they state, “Indeed, it's a requirement even for those focused simply on doing their current jobs well” (Ibbarra & Hunter, 2007, p.40). The following essay will illustrate and emphasise how networking helps organisations develop positive relationships with co-workers as well as train and educate them for leadership roles. Social linkages are referred to as encompassing a system that can be potential help in the leadership development process (Bartol & Zhang, 2007). Leaders must take into consideration their role within social networks in order for existing relation ships to be strengthened as well as establishing new connections between individuals and groups (Bartol & Zhang, 2007). An article by Casciaro, Gino & Kouchaki (2014) indicates the consequences of social networking on an individual and their mortality. They conducted four experiments to investigate the consequences of networking behaviours. Results revealed that “with regard to sources of variability in dirtiness from instrumental networking for professional goals, we document that when those who engage in such networking have high versus low power, they experience fewer feelings of dirtiness” (Casciaro et al., 2014, p.58). Therefore this article is highly effective because it helps emphasise the idea that relationships are tailored towards developing a positive connection and understanding with one another. However, this can only be applicable through effective network building rather than implementation of instrumental networking (Casciaro et al., 2014).
