English 111 Reflective Essay

Wow! What a semester and now – with this finial essay – it’s over. I walked into English 111 thinking that I wasn’t going to glean much information, after all I’ve been writing in various forms for a while now. Boy was I wrong. I’ve learned how to effectively outline essays, properly cite other author’s works and overall I’ve become better with punctuation. These were all points that I struggled with as a novice write, randomly placing commas wherever, haphazardly starting a writing project without any kind of guide and not giving credit to those who deserve it. Though I’m still a novice writer, all these points have made me a better writer overall. As I continue in my novice skill set, I applied one of the most valuable skills I learned in English 111 to this essay. Outlining is quite truly a simple process. It allows for the author to write the key points they wish to address quickly and concisely. It’s kind of like a frame work that can be used to build an essay, or any other type of writing really. I was wrong. I’ve learned more than I have ever learned in any other English class this semester. This class has truly taught me how to be a better writer by applying what I’ve learned. Creating an outlines that are the frame work to a good essay are important. Outlines will keep you on topic, on task and honestly make writing a little bit easier. Proper citations not only support your own thoughts, but also credit those who have taken the time to write about a topic they’re experts in. Punctuation is what brings it all together. It lets the author guide the reader to important points, emphasis and tone. English 111 wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and certainly not as easy as I thought it would be. I truly believe that hard things are worth doing and are worth doing right. It’s where you will learn the most and grow to become better than you were
