Does B. B. King sound familiar? Well most know him as the “King of Blues”, born in Itta Bena, Mississippi on September 16th, 1925. As a child growing up his parents had divorced and he lived with him mom up until nine then his mom passed away. He then moved in with his dad Albert King. B. B. King landed a job working at a cotton plantation in Indianola. On the job is where he was first introduced to the early sounds of blues. At that time King also sang gospel music in a church and even performed professionally, but was restricted from singing the blues because it was thought of as the “devil’s music”. Although he was forbidden to sing the blues it didn’t stop him to listening to recordings by early blues masters, especially Sonny Boy Williamson. He won a Grammy for Best traditional blues recording for Blue n’ Jazz. Then after appearing on the album Rattle and Hum he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1988 Grammy awards. King also was introduced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early 1990’s and earned a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. King was married and divorced twice in his lifetime. He had fifteen children, which he regrets not seeing grow up when he was on tour. With the imprisonment of his daughter in 1992, he slowed down his performance schedule at this time he was well into his sixties. In 2006, King went on a “farewell “world tour, although did still somewhat remain active afterwards. Few years later on October 3rd of 2014, King fell ill. He had battled with a long illness known as type two diabetes. When king went to be check out, King was diagnosed with dehydration and exhaustion, and he then canceled the remaining shows for the rest of the year. Once in a great while King would make an appearance, but never returned for good. On May 14th of 2015 we lost the “King of Blues” Riley B.
