Currently I work at Bayshore Medical Center as a Unit Secretary. I have worked for this hospital on and off for ten years. When I first started everything was done on paper. When doctors wrote order back then, we had to send it with whatever septum that was obtained to the lab. Because the lab had to know what test to run. This changed because most doctors have terrible handwriting. Soon they need an administrative person to read and rewrite the doctor’s orders so that the lab and techs could do the correct test. This process has changed even more with the invention of computers. A unit secretary is still needed to read the doctor’s orders but we now input them in the computer system and these orders are sent to the correct department. The test is understood because of the computer system and the secretary’s transcription of the written orders. …show more content…
Residents are given tablets, which they use to read test results on. With this technology and wireless internet healthcare has evolve to its current form. These residents can read a patient’s chart, put in orders, read results and email their attending about any issues on that patient. Technology has transformed healthcare with having instant access to a patient’s history, along with their medication and test results. My job is still needed to help with greeting visitors and the translation of written orders. Long gone are the days when a doctor would have to carry a beeper and rush to an emergency. When a nurse or a department wants to reach a doctor or a resident it’s just a phone call or text message. In some cases, we can page the doctor over head to respond to certain floors and departments. This form of mobile technology has its up and downs. In a hospital, it will help personal work efficiently. But because the act of being a doctor can be done remotely, it opens the door for doctors to not have to physical see their
