The current Constitution allows for an amendment to be passed with ⅔ votes from both chambers of Congress and also with ¾ of the state’s approval or with ⅔ of the state legislatures calling for a convention. Sabato’s view on calling a convention is interesting in that his interpretation of a state’s petition to call a Constitutional Convention never dies as well as the visual of a light on, light off policy. Proposed amendments that a state switches it’s light on for will remain on until they reach 34 states with their lights on or until the state shuts it’s light off. This visual allows for a Convention to be called the moment the 34th state light went on, meaning a Convention could be called promptly. The one area Sabato says needs to be addressed is the lack of a standardized way of submitting applications for an amendment or convention.…
Native American Sacagawea Sacagawea was a Lemhi-Shoshone woman who interpreted for and guided Lewis and Clark. At 13 Sacagawea was taken as a wife by trapper, Toussaint Charbonneau. When Lewis and Clark asked the trappers if any of them would be willing to guild them, Charbonneau told them about his Native American wife. Sacagawea was pregnant at the time, but managed to aid the men greatly and help them out of intense situations. Her son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau was born during the expedition.…
With the relocation and internment of the Japanese caused a lack or work force. In the case of Hawai’i they didn’t feel the need to intern their people because they knew the people that they lived with and trusted them. Also the Japanese population of about 150,000 being interned would collapse Hawaii's economy because of the work force that the internment would take away as well as many business being shut down. In Document 12 Roger Daniels states that “Japanese labor was crucial to both the civilian and the military economics of Hawai’i” (Doc.12). Though the case in Hawai’i was far different than that in California.…
Prohibition was the ban of alcohol. It started on December 17th, 1917.This was the 18th amendment. The vote from the house of representatives to get it ratified was 282 to 128. The senate's vote was 47 to 8. Finally in the early 1920’s it came into effect…
Technology has changed a lot over the years, but has it changed for the better? Many people think it has not. All over the world, people are on their cellular devices. Little do they know that the government can see everything they do and search on their phone. Therefore, I propose a 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution stating that Technology privacy will now be issued among everyone and the government will no longer have access to anyone's history.…
The Hartford Convention was a manifestation of Federalist discontent; Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Vermont were all represented in the convention by 26 men. They met in complete secrecy for three weeks, in all it wasn’t necessarily very radical, as all the convention asked for was financial assistance from Washington and a two-thirds vote in congress before and embargo could be passed. Although the Hartford Convention was never seen as a revolutionary event it did contribute to the bigger picture of nullification. These two events were great factors that led to the people having a larger say in federal government decisions.…
This was exemplified when Queen Liliuokalani tried to return voting ability to the poorer class of Hawaiians, but was overthrown in favor of wealthy, white plantation owners, who supported the United States. Shortly after, the Foraker Act was passed, which allowed the American president, instead of the Puerto Ricans, to select the governor and legislative upper house of the territory. Democracies, which are supposed to be governments of the people, should allow the people to vote for their own leaders and policies. Instead, nations under the control of the United States did not have that ability. Also, after the Spanish-American War, the new “independent” nation of Cuba was forced, under the Platt Amendment, to change its constitution and give more power to the American government.…
“Currently, Alaska gun laws do not need registration or let to buy or carry rifles, shotguns, and/or handguns. Although Alaska gun laws are still subject to federal gun laws, they also keep up their own unique provisions and guidelines. Alaska’s gun laws are generally less restrictive than those of many other states." as quoted by gun laws.…
The 4th amendment is being violated in this scenario; for the 4th amendment states that; “U.S. citizens are protected from unreasonable searches of a person’s property.” Mrs. Jones was only being a good neighbor and friendly. But the police lied to her that way they could gain access to her house. Then they proceed to look around then arrest her when they find a bomb. Yes, arresting her would protect everyone else, but you have to have a warrant before you can even arrest anyone.…
The Constitution of 1787 represented a true revolution in government. It guaranteed certain basic rights for citizens. It also established fundamental laws in the national government. America was in need of a reformed government. Several events led up to the Constitution of 1787.…
On December 5th,1933 the 21st amendment replied Prohibition. Listed as the 18th amendment, prohibition banned the manufacture, sale, or transportation of alcoholic beverages for consumption. The 21st amendment also allowed each state to set its own alcohol consumption laws. Nearer to this change, states kept the drinking ages higher around 21. It wasn’t until the passing of the 26th amendment that lowered voting ages from 21 years of age to 18 years.…
The Queen did not agree with the Constitution that was forced upon her brother and sought to change it. She wanted to make a new Constitution that gave power back to the Monarchy and help the Hawaiian Natives. The Hawaiian people were largely on her side with the majority of them opposing the Annexation. “To his excellency William McKinley, President, and The Senate of the United States...we the undersigned, Native Hawaiian Citizens, and residents of the District of Honolulu, Island of Oahu...earnestly protest against the annexation of the said Hawaiian Islands to the said United Sates of America in any form or shape." (1897 Petition Against the Annexation of…
Abstract In the modern times back in the late 18th century in the Constitution where the Founding Fathers were established the to rebuild the federal government to become more efficient than the recent government under the Article of Confederation, they were also published and ratified the ten natural rights of the citizens known as the Bill of Rights. In the Bill of Rights of the Congress, the Second Amendment, which infers that the people of the society has been entitled to have possessions of bearing weapons; although, in the modern society of today, where the amendment has become the most controversial of the Bill of Rights,as the critics came to a solution by preventing the people of the world of having…
One of the most controversial Amendments today is the ‘Right to Bear Arms.’ As I get older, I see life a lot more differently and how the Amendments can either be used in our favor as Americans or hurt us. To be more clear, the ‘Right to Bear Arms’ is the second Amendment of the United States Constitution passed by Congress September 25, 1789. Ratified December 15, 1791, the first 10 amendments form the Bill of Right. It is a well regulated Militia; being necessary to the security of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.…
The Second Amendment and the Right to Bear Arms The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution states "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms” (The Bill of Rights). This constitutional right supports gun owners across America, and proves every law abiding citizen in the United States of America has the right to bear arms. When there is a bombing we blame the bomber, when there is a car accident we blame the driver, so why when there is a shooting do we blame the gun. More gun control should not be put into effect on law abiding citizens.…
