The rivalry between the Soviets and the U.S. continued in space. They raced to see who could land a man on the moon first. In April of that year, the Soviets gained the lead by putting the first person to orbit Earth in to orbit. With the U.S. falling behind, they put the first American to orbit Earth in to space. Kennedy was determined to be the first one to land a man on the moon. Congress funded NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) so that they could expand their launching facility in Florida and build a control center in Huston, Texas. On July 20, 1969, viewers around the world watched as spacecraft Eagle landed on the moon. When astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped out of the spacecraft, he said his famous words. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." By the end of the space race, another 10 Americans had landed on the moon.
