SF Bay Area Air Pollution Risk Assessment

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) is an agency responsible for air pollution control in the San Francisco Bay Area. The BAAQMD is devoted to improving air quality and public health to all Bay Area citizens. Communities in the SF Bay Area that have the highest health risk from air pollution are Concord, Eastern San Francisco, Western Alameda County, Redwood City/East Palo Alto, Richmond/San Pablo, and San Jose.
Several pollutant types and sources are harmful to health in the Bay Area. Toxic air contaminants (TAC) contribute to many short-term and long-term health effects including eye and throat irritation, neurological damage, development defects, and cancer (Martien, Lau, & Fairley, 2014). The Air District’s 2010 Clean Air Plan recognized ozone, PM2.5, and TAC as the greatest health burdens in the Bay Area. There are three major emission sources for TAC; permitted sources, on-road mobile sources, and distributed area sources. Permitted sources are large industrial sources such as refineries and power plants. On-road mobile sources are the vehicles that travel on roads or highways. Distributed area sources are off-road mobile sources such as ships and wood burning. Fine PM is

Indoor exposure to air pollutants may occur in both private and public indoor environments, including homes, offices, schools, hospitals and transport systems. IAQ is affected by toxic gases (such as carbon monoxide [CO] and nitrogen oxides [NOx]), volatile organic compounds (VOCs, such as formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, styrene), pesticides, lead, flame retardants, respirable particles and dust, smoking (secondhand and third-hand), various biological pollutants (such as mold and bacteria), and physical contaminants (radiation, electromagnetic radiation, and asbestos). The main factors affecting IAQ are ventilation, indoor sources of pollutants, and the quality of ambient air entering the building. Poor IAQ has been associated with health effects such as asthma, chronic obstructive lung diseases, bronchitis (primarily in children), allergic reactions, and an increased risk of infectious disease. Low socio-economic status is also likely to contribute to the presence of factors that significantly affect…

According to division of Division of Air Quality, they estimated that 89 percent of emissions that contribute to PM 2.5 were from mobile and area sources (SLC, 2015). Mobile sources are on-road vehicles. Area sources are small industrial and commercial sources that emit less than 100 tons per year of pollution and…

LA is home to the 5th largest airport (LAX) and port (Port of Los Angeles) in the world. LA also has 14 oil refineries, which produce a fair share of chemicals, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are released in the air. Over 5 million cars are registered in the county of Los Angeles, the only states that have more cars than Los Angeles county registered are Texas, New York, Florida, and Ohio. With more than 600,000 cars sold in Southern California annually, and with 96.4% of LA’s population driving to work the exhaust piles up.…

American Municipal Power Inc. had a station named Gorsuch Station which released tons of Sulfur oxides, Nitrogen Oxides, and particulate matter. Gorsuch station was a coal-fired power plant. Although they failed to obtain necessary permits and install controls for reducing their emissions, EPA was there to stop them from polluting our precious air with the help of the United States funding. Air is free moving which means air from California has the potential to reach other neighboring states. Sadly, Sulfur oxides is also able to move freely with the help of winds.…

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency or EPA, “The San Joaquin Valley has some of the nation’s worst air quality, failing to meet federal health standards for both ozone (smog) and particulate pollution. Ground level ozone pollution has a corrosive effect on the lungs which may cause a decrease in lung functions while particulate matter such as soot, can enter the lungs and stick to them causing heart problems and breathing complications There are also several other health implications that can occur due to air pollution, some of those include, dry throat, chest pain and tightness, dry throat, head ache, nausea, and can also be more severe such as developing chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis (ValleyAir.org, n.d.). One of the health risks that is most common is Asthma. A health survey from 2001 by the California Health Interview Survey showed that there was a 24% higher prevalence of asthma in children in the San Joaquin Valley when compared to the rest of the state. In adults the survey showed that there was a 19% higher prevalence, overall there are approximately 110,000 children and 240,000 adults with asthma in the San Joaquin Valley alone.…

Air pollution is a serious public health concern globally [1]. Exposure to ambient air pollution increases mortality and morbidity [2]. Ambient air particulate matter (PM) is the main component of air pollution and has a significant impact on human health [3]. Epidemiologic studies have shown that lung function of people is adversely affected by exposure to airborne particulate matters (APM) pollution [4-6]. In the other words, there is evidence from past studies that ambient air PM (such as PM2.5 and PM1) is associated with decrement of lung function indices (such as FVC and FEV1) [7, 8].…

Air Quality Index (AQI) reports on a daily basis what our local air quality is, whether it is clean or toxic. The Air Quality Index calculates four major air pollutants that are regulated by the Clean Air Act, which is comprehensive federal law regulating ground level ozone, particle pollution, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide (Environmental Protection Agency, 2009). Residents may hear warnings that it is a code red day for the ozone level, meaning that the particulate pollution levels are unhealthy for sensitive groups (Environmental Protection Agency,…
