Ralph Ellison was growing up in a tuff time. He was a black man defying the odds and socials standards placed on him. In this time a black man wasn’t able to do many things. A black person in that time was only one thing to the world. To get out of these social standards was vigorous work. You not only had to be better you had to have the heart to push through the people holding you back. In this Short story he was the top of his class and an amazing writer but that wasn’t enough because of the color of his skin. There was the conflict of social acceptance for black people, no matter how intelligent you were. It was not right for a person to be treated like this. It’s one thing to be considered a joke to your pears but not the world. As a human being it’s not right treat others like they are just a scum of the earth. In this time, it must not have been your character that defined you, it must have been your color because a white man was considered better rich or poor. In the story the boys were paraded around like show monkeys. At one point they were laughed at while trying to retrieve coins from an electric rug. He used things like the fight to show that Blacks have no choice in a matter. When they got in the ring they had to fight to the death. The ring was showing what black life was supposed to be like. He used it in a way to give people a reminder that nothing in the world has changed. The people went from slavery to forcing them to fight like animals. It shows that the times have not changed. They just got better at justifying what they were doing at that time. Ralph Ellison through the whole thing was trying to Keep his dignity while trying to remember his speech he had worked so hard on.
