The third most important battle was the battle of Vicksburg, which was on the Mississippi river. The entire battle lasted 47 days and in the last days of it another battle started and ended one day before Vicksburg ended but it will be mentioned later. Ulysses S. Grant was commander in this battle and had previously won in the battle of Shiloh when the Confederates launched an unsuccessful surprise attack on his soldiers. On the other hand, the Confederates had John C. Pemberton to lead their smaller army. Before the battle, John C. Perberton also played a part in the Mexican-American war, just like Ulysses S. Grant. According to Abraham Lincoln, Vicksburg was the most important part of winning the war and changing where the resources went. Abraham wasn't the only one who thought that at the time though, the president of the Confederate States also knew that Vicksburg could win the war; his name was Jefferson Davis. So the Vicksburg campaign started and the Union made movements to take Vicksburg until the Confederate army surrendered to the Union army in 1863. Now Vicksburg was the Union and they had the Mississippi River to accompany it. The Confederates surrendered at Warren County, MS to Ulysses S. Grant and he later on actually commanded eastern Tennessee. Back to the battle though, now that Abraham Lincoln had Vicksburg it was almost determined who would win this War. However, how would the war be determined? This is because the south only controlled the Mississippi river with Vicksburg and the loss of it would cancel all valuable assets it carried.
