The history of the Newport News Shipyard is very fascinating because of the the founder and his history, and how the USS Midway was built there. But, when was it founded? Was there other ships built there? These questions will be answered as I tell you all about the Newport News Shipyard and why it is so fascinating. The Newport News Shipyard is 131 years old. That means that it was founded in the year clof 1886. It is located in the city of Newport News in Virginia. The Newport News Shipyard is the only shipyard in the United States capable of building nuclear powered aircraft carriers. Also, many of the famous aircraft carriers that have been used were built there. In fact, there is an aircraft carrier being built there right now and is expected to join the navy this year! It goes by the USS Gerald Ford, which is the first aircraft carrier in the Ford class. Another very famous aircraft carrier built there was the USS Midway. …show more content…
It was launched on March 20, 1945. It was the largest ship in the world until 1955. It was also the first ship to big to transit the Panama Canal. The Midway was in service from 1945 to 1992, and is now a very popular museum in San Diego. The Midway was built to be 972 feet long, and to travel up to 38 miles per hour. The USS Midway was in a very famous battle known as the Battle of the Midway. This battle was a naval battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The United States won that battle which allowed them , and its allies, to move into an offensive position. The USS Midway was decommissioned in 1992 and since them has become the museum we come to know and love in San Diego. This whole thing was built in the Newport News Shipyard thanks to its
