a. The First Battle of the Marne: The First Battle of the Marne was very important for the Allied Powers. The French Army was retreating back to the south of the Marne River. Since a German Army was quickly approaching, the French commander made the brave decision to make a counter-attack. France sent more reinforcements including infantryman sent on 600 taxi cabs which was the first time auto-mobiles were involved in warfare. France pushed the Germans back with a surprise attack within the night and they actually retreated. The trench warfare was used in the next three years. This battle was within France near the Marne River, facing Germany and Belgium. This battle started in September 6th – 12th, 1914.

After America sent in troops to try to capture and hold the city, France stepped in and provided some support to assist the capture. They took over Cantigny and held up against seven German counter attacks.
