Battle Of Somme Eulogy

Decent Essays
I am very blissful that I am talking to you and I’m glad to be alive. My fellow soldier’s and I have just been through the deadliest battle of our lives, the Battle Of Somme. The Germans call the battle “The Blood Bath” that is because 60 000 soldiers died in that one day. This incident was because of our senseless commander Sir Douglas Haig, he led all of us to our graves but, some of us have lived to tell about it. Sir Douglas was a British general and commanded us at the battle in Verdun. After 2 weeks of heavy shelling, Sir Douglas gave us the order to go “over the top” which means that we have to go over the trenches and fight head on. Little did we know that the Germans were safely in their trenches, waiting for the shelling to stop and

Canadians put General Arthur Currie in command of the soldiers. General Currie created a well-thought plan for each of the four divisions. This operation is not being planned with any alternatives. This operation is planned as a Victory and that's the way it is going to be. We are going down there, and we're throwing everything we have into it, and we're going to make it a success"(General Dwight D. Eisenhower 1). Everyone had that same feeling on D-Day. To the troops, generals, and even civilians everyone was on their toes waiting for one of the greatest invasions in history, where the Americans, French, and Canadians launched the attack on the beaches of France against the Germans.…

June 6th of 1944, better known as D-Day, was not the first time the Allies had planned a major large scale invasion against Nazi Germany. The British were considering the possibility of a major Allied invasion across the English Channel in 1942 as well as later on in 1943. However, none of these operations were ever carried out, specifically due to the fact that the Germans were almost always aware of the Allies’ plans. This was not the case during D-Day, though, because the Germans did not know exactly where the Allies would strike. As a result, Adolf Hitler ordered Erwin Rommel to finish the Atlantic Wall, a 2,400-mile fortification of bunkers, landmines, and beach/water obstacles (Levine 43).…

Hero, that’s what they continue to call me here, but I don’t feel like one. I mean, how could I feel like one? I was awarded and honored as one of the best dogfighters in the German military. Having said that, I know that I was only given that recognition because of all the destruction I brought in the air. However, who will honor all of the lost soldiers?…

Troops were given detailed information on the location of enemy strong points, and were shown models and maps of the battlefield based on aerial photographs of the ridge. Those soldiers were no longer all be riflemen they were assigned specific tasks such as machine gunners or grenade-throwers. [ idem] After a week of intense bombardment, the Canadian Army attacked the Vimy Ridge at 5:30 am on 9 April which was known as Easter Monday. “Timing and co-ordination were critical — the troops moved up the long western slope of the ridge, just behind a rolling artillery barrage designed to keep the Germans hidden in their bunkers and away from their machine guns as long as possible”. [ Foot, R. (n.d.).…

This battle had boiled down to a matter of prestige of two countries truly just for the fighting… The attack on Verdun, called ‘Judgement’ by the Germans, was Erich von Falkenhayn’s, the German Chief of General Staff, plan to make a great push on the French. Falkenhayn wanted to “bleed France white” by pulling a huge force to attack a narrow strip of land that was historically important to the French, Verdun. Verdun was not the only place in the area, within several miles there were twenty major forts and forty minor forts which also had historic value to the French. All of these forts had protected the eastern borders of France for many years.…

My dearest family, Shall I not return, I would like you to have my last words, my last thoughts, and to know what it is really like here. The press seems to glorify things, to inspire men I presume. Our unit arrived to the front 5 weeks ago, yet life is already a living hell. When we arrived, it was pouring rain, and the men and I were knee deep in a brown pool of water, muck and other things I care not to think of. The air reeks of decay and waste, corpses are everywhere; of men, cows, and rats.…

Christmas Truce I smile. For the first time in my few weeks here, I smile. I run to look over the steep, mud wall of the trench and through the dirtied barbed wire. "The Somme set the picture by which future generations saw the First World War: hapless soldiers; blundering obstinate generals; nothing achieved. " -A.J.P Taylor One of the ways the Battle of the Somme had significance in World War One was the attritional wearing down of the German army. The war took a turning point in 1916, up until then some kind of peace could have been reached and an agreement made, this all changed in 1916.…
