Although it is a small town Gettysburg offers a wide array of activities captivating its place as a splendid tourist designation. Gettysburg maintains an emphasis on preserving the land but keeping battlefields protected and undeveloped. It also houses the eternal flame monument that burns at all hours and represents peace. Every year the town hosts a Battle of Gettysburg Reenactment on the exact dates as the original battle, July 1-3. Tourists and townspeople are gifted a beautiful visual representation of one the most important battles in American history. The participants flourish in their roles, reenacting the actions of their ancestors, dressing in authentic uniforms, sleeping in tents and carrying rifles. A major attraction indeed, the small town has historically succeeded in cultivating a large crowd.
