An air battle with German and British air forces took place in Britain, from July 10 to October 31. In 1940, the battle started in August 30-31. The Germans had an upper hand over the British, they had seized airfields in Belgium, France, and Netherlands. There was to believe the battle was divided into four phases but actually there were five phases.
The first phase of the German’s aerial assault on Britain was to concentrate on convoys sailing on the English Channel. The first phase took place in July 10 until the 7th of August, during this time it was called the preliminary phase. This phase of the battle took place when The Battle of France had ended and The Battle of Britain was about to begin. Before Britain’s battle begun there were problems the campaigns in France and Norway had left the Fighter Command’s squadrons in a weakened state. There was a lack of equipment, lack of ground crew since many of them were entrap in France, and pilot fatigue. However, these losses were made to good use and pilots, aircrafts, and operational squadron that were available shortly expanded. Basically this one was how Luftwaffe wanted to place a strangle hold around Britain to destroy the ships, port, damage the aircraft industry, to undermine the Home Defense system, and especially the strength of Fighter Command to establish a full on scale aerial assault that was planned for mid-August. After the scale attack on Portland Naval Base along with the first all-out on the radar stations, German’s Confidence was high on launching the third phase of the battle. During the Channels Battle Boulton Paul Defiant turret fighters from 141 Squadron was seriously damaged, losing six of its nine aircraft.
