Battle Of Algiers

The movie “The Battle of Algiers” directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, highlights the efforts of the Muslim Algerian population fighting for independence of their country from the French government. The movie had a documentary type theme to it, making the movie more realistic and actually encounter what’s really happening. Two particular foes stood out throughout the movie. On the French side was Paratrooper Colonel Mathieu, whose sole mission is to stay in Algeria to erase any chance of an Algerian rebellion. The Algerian population initiated a movement “National Liberation Front of Algiers” a group of Muslim Algerians who conducted to contend for independence in Algeria against their French government and the paratroops stationed in their country. We see examples of anti-colonialism, nationalism, and violation of human rights by neglecting the just cause of war theory. In the film it was evident each state was responsible for harming innocent civilians with bombings, arrests, torture, and assassinations.
Pontecovero, I believe made an unbiased movie showing neither side was innocent, the FLN were inclined to use noncombatants such as children and women. In the film you see three Muslim women bringing in bombs to the French sector and blowing up a French café. You also see children died from French bombings. The FLN had teenagers harm and kill police officers and that proves the FLN is striving to gain their independence and promote awareness of their organization nationwide.
